Parma Cathedral

Parma Cathedral

One of the top attractions of Parma is the Cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of Saint Mary. We have recently celebrated the 900th anniversary of its consecration which, according to historians, took place in 1106.

The Cathedral is Romanesque in style and from the outside it looks bulky and somber whereas inside you will be surprised by the gracefulness and wealth of the frescoes and of the decorations.

The cupola of the Cathedral was frescoed by the Renaissance painter Antonio Allegri, best known as Correggio (1489 ? – 1534), with the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Another masterpiece inside the Cathedral is the famous marble relief sculpted by Benedetto Antelami with the Deposition of Christ from the Cross (dated 1178), one of the finest examples of Romanesque sculpture
